I am always looking forward to a great romantic dose of Jenny Hale's books, and thankfully she writes two books a year! So when the day arrives, I am sure to dip my toes into a perfectly wrapped package of a story.
In the Summer House, Jenny Hale yet again waved her magical writing wand and transported me right into Outer Banks, a beautiful place nestled on the white sand of North Caroline beach.
Callie Weaver and best friend Olivia Dixon have finally done it: put their life savings into the beach house they admired through childhood summers, on the dazzling white sand of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. They’re going to buff the salt from its windows, paint its sun-bleached sidings, and open it as a Bed &Breakfast.
Callie’s too busy to think about her love life, but when she catches the attention of local heartthrob Luke Sullivan, his blue eyes and easy smile make it hard to say no. He’s heir to his father’s property empire, and the papers say he’s just another playboy, but as they laugh in the ocean waves, Callie realises there’s more to this man than money and good looks.
Just when true happiness seems within reach, Callie and Olivia find a diary full of secrets... secrets that stretch across the island and have the power to turn lives upside down. As Callie reads, she unravels a mystery that makes her heart drop through the floor.
As in all previous Jenny Hale books, I found myself adoring the leading character of The Summer House, Callie Weaver who jumped at a chance to make her childhood dream come true. Callie eagerly throws herself in making Beachcomber a successful Bed&Breakfast business with the help of her best friends Olivia. Callie has a charming personality and therefore seem to attract the attention of local "celebrity' Luke Sullivan, and although those two don't move in the same circle, they appear to be drawn to one another.
The supporting cast of characters are equally adorable - Olivia, her young son Wyatt and Gladys provide much-needed love and support for Callie who is quite guarded when it comes to love.
The author's building of the setting and the area of Outer Banks made me almost feel the sand on my toes and the ocean spray on my face.
Aside from the budding romances throughout the story, there was also another aspect that piqued my interest - the discovery of a mysterious diary and a lockbox added layer to the story and brought it to an intriguing level.
I love when romance perfectly balances with a dose of mystery!
Jenny Hale so effortlessly manages to write a story where the words just leap out of the pages tugging me on an adventure that is full of sparkle, warmth, love and intrigue.
