The Author Penny Parkes
Meet married mum of two and successful GP Holly Graham as she relocates her family to join the team at The Practice at Beckerford, hoping to find the peaceful life she craves, despite the chaos that comes with her two year old twins and the troublesome state of her marriage. It will certainly be a challenge to keep her private and professional lives separate in such a tight-knit community.
Her colleagues have their own issues to contend with. The gorgeous Dr Dan Carter is struggling with to focus on work and the last thing he needs is any more stress; having his ambitious ex-girlfriend Dr Julia Channing working alongside him isn't really helping. Thankfully, the rather delectable Dr Taffy Jones is on hand to distract Holly from the escalating situation at home.
Feisty octogenarian and resident celebrity, Elsie Townsend, is Holly's favourite patient and saving grace. Elsie's inspirational Life Lessons come at the perfect moment, as The Practice is suddenly under threat of imminent closure and Holly rediscovers her voice and her priorities just in time …
My honest thoughts on this book:
I must admit that firstly I was so smitten with the cover design of this book and then when I read more about the story I was intrigued to find out more not only about the book but also about the author Penny Parkes.
And I was blown away by the captivating storyline of Out of Practice as well as the fabulous and well-rounded characters (there is quite a few ). One is for sure I will be eagerly awaiting another book by this wonderfully skilled author.
The epicentre of this book is The Practice, a doctor sugery in an idyllic town of Larkford. The Practice is a hot hub of fantastic doctors, gossip and plotting. When a new and a very successful doctor, Holly Graham joins the Larkford team things pick up speed.
Holly relocated for a few reasons but the main one was to give her rapidly disintegrating marriage second chance and the second reason was to be close to her bestie Lizzie. What Holly didn't know was that her whole life is about tho change, hopefully for the better but then you will have to read the whole book to find out if Holly gets her happy ever after.
While I bonded with Holly the second, I read the first page I intensely dislike her egoistic husband, Milo. I could not understand while Holly even put up with his ever so tiring character and his lack of father skills.
There are a couple of other characters that I must mention. First, the hunky doctor Taffy Jones who rapidly changes his wayward ways when he meets Holly and her adorable twins and Holly could not take her eyes of our Taffy and his friendly, warm and just lovely attitude.
Then there is Lizzie, Holly's best friend. Lizzie needs Holly more then she shows and after a few shocking discoveries, Holly is starting to wonder if their life long friendship will survive after all.
Every character in this page turner had its place in the tight-knit community of Larkford, and every character had a story to be told. There were some complicated health issues, personal demons to fight off and some hard decisions to make. I could not peel my eyes of this fast flowing, intriguing and truly fabulous book.
I highly recommend Out of Practice for anyone who after a book with a few twists and turns, a story that sizzles with emotion, passion and driving need to love and be loved. A remarkable debut.
